Adelaide – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 5th
The Crows were less than 5% out of finishing in the top 4 last year, which could’ve proven very different in their finals campaign. They surprisingly covered the loss of Dangerfield, and had phenomenal offensive output with Betts, Walker and another breakout year from the now locked away Josh Jenkins.
Defensively sound, with an above average disposal efficiency of 79% there only improvements can come from the ruck and half-back line. Another contender for finals.
Adelaide 2017 Flag odds $9.00
Adelaide 2017 'make the top 8' odds $1.45
Win/loss prediction: 15W - 7L
Brisbane – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 18th
Another Head Coach GONE, though they have stemmed the loss of players and even recruit a local product in big Tom Bell from Carlton. All of a sudden their midfield and ruck doesn’t look too bad with Martin, Beams, Bell and Rockliff.
The loss of Pearce Hanley to neighbours Gold Coast hurts, though the Lions are well aware they need to draft and develop the bookends of the team. Any games that happen to be on free-to-air we’d advise taking the Missus on a date.
Brisbane Lions 2017 Flag odds $501.00
Brisbane Lions 2017 'make the top 8' odds $15.00
Win/loss prediction: 3W - 19L
Carlton – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 15th
Impressed everyone with how quickly they turned their game around with barely any talent on the list, even with a win in Perth against Freo. The question is can they get improved scoring output from Kreuzer, Casboult and Rowe.
Will take a backward step this year though seem to be in capable hands under Bolton, with their future hopes still 4-5 years away at least.
Carlton 2017 Flag odds $9.00
Carlton 2017 'make the top 8' odds $7.00
Win/loss prediction: 6W - 16L
Collingwood – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 13th
We correctly predicted their position last year, and anticipate them to drop a little further. We are as surprised as any Nathan Buckley is still HC, as they have the budget/facilities/players to mount a successful campaign.
Mayne will be out to impress as a swing man, though Freo won in that trade, and their major issue still lies in the middle of the field. Losing Witts to Gold Coast hurts given their lack of ruck depth, time to see if Mason Cox can actually play or if he just got a lucky run last year.
Collingwood 2017 Flag odds $34.00
Collingwood 2017 'make the top 8' odds $2.65
Win/loss prediction: 9W - 13L
Essendon – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 5th
The bombers have fought through the noise and have honestly finished up on top, with a season of experience to all their rookies, a year of rest to all suspended players AND a #1 draft pick. Not bad eh?
Don’t expect too much from the Bombers this year, it is essentially a new team under a new Coach. Should be able to put up some scores along with their improved defensive efforts.
Essendon 2017 Flag odds $23.00
Essendon 2017 'make the top 8' odds $2.50
Win/loss prediction: 4W - 18L
Fremantle – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 10th
A fall from grace, one we didn’t predict. Freo were hit very hard with injuries early on in the season – losses to Sandilands (rib/lung), Fyfe (leg) and Johnson (back) derailed any hope they had of season success. Any team that loses their A grade players doesn’t stand much of a chance.
Much like the Bombers, Freo were able to blood youth and finally had a profitable free-agency in picking up young forwards McCarthy, Kersten along with Brad Hill and Hamling from the Bulldogs.
They shredded their list and asked some very hard questions, Freo could squeeze into the 8 this year though let’s see how the new faces blend with a new (or back to old) game plan.
Fyfe a very strong favourite for the Brownlow again.
Fremantle 2017 Flag odds $16.00
Fremantle 2017 'make the top 8' odds $2.50
Win/loss prediction: 12W - 10L
Geelong – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 4th
A poor showing in the preliminary final against Sydney disappointed all, the Cats could very well have been Grand Finalists had they not been 7 goals down in the 1st quarter. The narrative of their year was slow starts and this can’t continue in 2017 if they want to push for the Flag.
Geelong could very comfortably win their first 5 matches of the year against Freo, North, Melbourne, Hawthorn and St Kilda (so look strongly at riding the win odds here) and I’d back them in comfortably for a top 4 finish with Selwood and Dangerfield in the Midfield.
They’ve lost 40 goals/season in Kersten (Freo) and Caddy (Richmond) so will have to get that covered from the Ruckmen (Stanley or Smith) or a speedy forward (Gregson or Cockatoo).
Geelong 2017 Flag odds $11.00
Geelong 2017 'make the top 8' odds $1.45
Win/loss prediction: 15W - 7L
Gold Coast Suns – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 17th
An exodus of their talented midfielders Prestia and O’Meara have left the suns expecting a lot from their young brigade, veteran Barlow from Freo and of course, Gary Ablett Jr.
They acquired paceman Hanley from the Lions which bolsters their halfback line, though lost Malceski to retirement.
The Suns have bugger all depth, questions surrounding Eades ability to communicate to young players, combined with losses in the midfield have us believe they will drop down the ladder in 2017.
Gold Coast 2017 Flag odds $41.00
Gold Coast 2017 'make the top 8' odds $4.00
Win/loss prediction: 4W - 18L
GWS Giants – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 5th
The Giants have undeniably the best talent on their roster, furthered AGAIN by the acquisition of Brett Deledio. They have lost a few players (as they have every year) but just keep topping up with top draft picks AGAIN and AGAIN!
Mumford and Lobb proved a vicious Ruck combination in 2016 and the Giants can kick a goal a minute with their speedy dead-eye midfield group.
They open the season against Adelaide, Gold Coast and North Melbourne, and should be 3-0 and well on their way to a top 4 finish again. Any home game I’d back strongly also (Rd 2 and 4) as Manuka Oval has become quite the fortress.
GWS 2017 Flag odds $4.50
GWS 2017 'make the top 8' odds $1.16
Win/loss prediction: 16W - 6L
Hawthorn – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 6th
Once again had a very active trade period, moving on from their Brownlow Medallist Mitchell and trading Lewis to Melbourne (who’ll fit in nicely there).
They got the start midfielders they wanted in Mitchell from Sydney and O’Meara and are bolstered by what looks like a returning Roughead.
The Hawks WILL play through September again, though have a few chinks showing in their armour now. Lock away a top 8 position, and ‘IF’ Roughead is fully fit he’s a strong chance at the Coleman.
Hawthorn 2017 Flag odds $16.00
Hawthorn 2017 'make the top 8' odds $13.00
Win/loss prediction: 14W - 8L
Melbourne – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 11th
The Demons now have one of the gruntiest midfields in the competition, particularly with the pickup of Jordan Lewis to go along with Jones, Vince, Oliver and Viney.
Need to clean up their disposal and score more efficiently, and Lewis plus another year into the midfield group should accomplish this.
Not finals bound yet, but expect a rise up the ladder once again.
Melbourne 2017 Flag odds $23.00
Melbourne 2017 'make the top 8' odds $2.20
Win/loss prediction: 10W - 12L
North Melbourne – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 14th
Definite premiership pretenders last year, North were unrelenting in their veteran list cull without offering contracts to Firrito, Dal Santo, Petrie and Harvey (who had a wonderful season).
There are many holes in the team though young Mason Cox showed he can hold down a forward role, along with Ben Brown’s marking and goal kicking ability.
Make no mistake, North are rebuilding so don’t expect anything more from the team this year.
North Melbourne 2017 Flag odds $67.00
North Melbourne 2017 'make the top 8' odds $3.00
Win/loss prediction: 8W - 14L
Port Adelaide – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 7th
WILL play finals this year again, that’s our call. With the list they have, Ryder and Monfries back, along with their facilities and Coaching group. Sad to see Schulz and Carlile finish up, though Port have the depth to cover this.
Midfield didn’t fire so well in 2016, so big lifts are expected form Boak, Hartlett and Wines.
They have capable bookends in dominant Dixon and Trengove and speedy smalls in Wingard and Neade. One to watch in 2017.
Port Adelaide 2017 Flag odds $34.00
Port Adelaide 2017 'make the top 8' odds $2.50
Win/loss prediction: 14W - 8L
Richmond – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 12th
Don’t expect much from Richmond this year. Picking up Prestia and Caddy helps a miserable midfield, though aside form Rance their defence stinks.
Deledio is gone (easily good for a 2-3 goal differential per game) and their drafting over the past few years has left much to be desired.
Will be good to see where Dustin Martin fares in the Brownlow count, and a few hangers from Riewoldt though.
Richmond 2017 Flag odds $3.75
Richmond 2017 'make the top 8' odds $51.00
Win/loss prediction: 9W - 13L
St Kilda – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 8th
Our mystery prediction for the top 8 this season, probably would’ve stood a better chance than North in 2016’s finals had their % been better.
They’ve moved on from a few lower list players but still have a highly effective forward line in Membrey, Riewoldt, McCartin who’s maturing and Bruce.
Need to improve in the midfield and contested ball, but can play the exciting fast moving footy that is proving to be a winning formula these days.
St Kilda 2017 Flag odds $26.00
St Kilda 2017 'make the top 8' odds $2.50
Win/loss prediction: 13W - 9L
Sydney – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 1st
Another GF loss, a taste the Swans don’t want to get familiar with. In fairness, no better team to lose to than the Mighty Sons of the West – but Sydney will come back with vengeance in 2017.
Essentially the same list, the power forwards Franklin and Tippett should click more with Sydney's strong defensive rebound after another pre-season together.
The loss of Tom Mitchell to Hawthorn is big, expect more midfield time from Gary Rohan and young Zak Jones to cover this.
Sydney face Port, Bulldogs, Collingwood, West Coast and GWS in their first month of footy with 3 home games amongst that. Expect them to win 4 of these (danger games being the Giants and Bulldogs) and should finish with 17 wins again in 2017.
Sydney 2017 Flag odds $7.00
Sydney 2017 'make the top 8' odds $1.22
Win/loss prediction: 17W - 5L
West Coast – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 9th
The loss of Nic Nat is more significant than most realise for the upcoming season. Petrie will kick some goals, and take a defender out of the mix – but too much rests on Kennedy and their thin defensive group.
Time for Gaff, Masten and Shuey to step up and help Priddis out – and until Natanui is back on the pitch they won’t be playing finals that’s for sure.
West Coast 2017 Flag odds $11.00
West Coast 2017 'make the top 8' odds $1.55
Win/loss prediction: 12W - 10L
Western Bulldogs – 2017 AFL Ladder Prediction 2nd
The STORY OF THE YEAR, only found in fairytales – not a dry eye around Australia, not even from Sydney supporters. Against adversity (away games), injuries (Murphy, Redpath, Jong), suspensions (Crameri) and having finished 7th on the ladder nothing could stop the Bulldogs and their fans.
Could this be a dynasty on the rise? The next ‘back to back’ OR ‘3 peat’?
Their list is only stronger with the additions of all the above players, key resigning’s in McLean and Jong along with their 1st round draft pick WA Ruckman Tim English. The infamous Travis Cloke signing, regardless of your views, will give them even stronger forward depth and despite his wayward kicking over the past few seasons he’s still a 100kg+ contested marking specialist.
Western Bulldogs 2017 Flag odds $5.50
Western Bulldogs 2017 'make the top 8' odds $1.20
Win/loss prediction: 13W - 9L
