Melbourne Spring Odds: A Strong International Feel For 2014
August 19th, 2014 by Pom de TurfIt looks like this year’s Spring Season will feature a Melbourne Cup with a strong international connection – there will be overseas raiders aplenty coming to our shores in hopes of bagging the Cup. And a look through the Racing odds as the Melbourne Spring creeps closer shows you that there are a few international horses who Read the rest of this entry »

August 19th, 2014 by Pom de TurfWe’re a long way out from the Melbourne Spring, and the big races that will be the focus of attention for the press and for most punters. There are already some great stories shaping up, though, and one of them is Gai Waterhouse’s The Offer, who’s a chance to bring Australia’s first lady of Racing a second Melbourne Cup win. But the Melbourne Cup isn’t the only race where the Racing odds feature The Offer prominently: could the talented gelding bring Waterhouse an incredible double by winning both the Melbourne Cup and the Caulfield Cup?
Well, things can Read the rest of this entry »

August 14th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThere aren’t that many folk who get the chance to lift the Melbourne Cup. Owning and training thoroughbreds is an expensive business, though we suppose the rewards on offer are commensurate with the investment. To lift the Melbourne Cup, though, must be worth about as much to the owners and trainers who win it as the cheque is. And with sponsors Emirates taking the Cup itself on tour around Australia and New Zealand, now’s your chance to get a little sliver of what it feels like to lift the famous trophy, and get a photo of yourself with it for good measure!
Not that any more effort is needed to promote The Race That Stops A Nation – if only judging by the early activity on those Melbourne Cup odds – but we think it’s a great idea by Read the rest of this entry »

August 14th, 2014 by Pom de TurfCrackerjack King is a well-travelled horse. He’s an Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock horse these days, and based in Australia, but collected wins and placing in Italy, the UK and the US before he came to Australia ahead of last year’s Spring Season. He was all set to make an appearance in the Racing odds for last year’s Melbourne Spring, too, but tendon trouble put paid to the whole campaign, and his hopes of a big result in 2013 were dashed.
He’s back to trialling now, though, and trainer David Hayes Read the rest of this entry »

August 13th, 2014 by Pom de TurfIt’s as prestigious a stable as any in racing, and the name Godolphin has become synonymous with quality horses, and with genuine contenders for the biggest races around the world – including the signature races of the Melbourne Spring Season, and the Melbourne Cup in particular. And judging by what’s been unfolding at Goodwood over the last couple of weeks, there will be a number of Godolphin stayers whose names feature strongly in the Racing odds as Read the rest of this entry »

August 13th, 2014 by Pom de TurfIt’s great to see a trainer backing his horse to win a race like the Cox Plate, and that’s exactly what Peter McKay was prepared to do when he spoke to Trackside a week ago about his Melbourne Spring prospect Puccini. So if you’re inclined to believe that the leading Kiwi trainer might have some idea what he’s talking about, then make sure you look out for Puccini in those Racing odds as the Cox Plate rolls around…
It’s Puccini’s speed that has McKay waxing so confident about the chances of his 4-year-old: ‘a lot of the horses that have won the Cox Plate generally race on the speed, you have to have Read the rest of this entry »

August 13th, 2014 by TJ DilferRound 23 of this year’s NRL regular season looks like it could finish with a really tight game – when the Panthers and the Cowboys meet on Monday night there won’t be much between them in terms of odds, and there isn’t all that much between them on the ladder, either. We’ve got all the Round 23 odds – including that Monday night game and everything that comes before it in another crucial weekend of action…

August 13th, 2014 by Pom de TurfIt goes without saying that a race like the Melbourne Cup makes memories. And there have been some indelible memories made for all of us over the years – a few of them made by the same horse, Dunaden. It was Dunaden who won the closest Melbourne Cup finish, and it was Dunaden who represented a generation of overseas raiders, winning the Caulfield Cup the year after he snuck the Melbourne Cup. So it was with real sadness that we read the news of Dunaden’s retirement from racing through injury, and that sadness will be repeated every time we look down a list of Racing odds for any of the big races in the Melbourne Spring that doesn’t feature that familiar name.
Dunaden retires with Read the rest of this entry »

August 13th, 2014 by Pom de TurfIt was a 1-2 for Godolphin in the Goodwood Cup, with Ahzeemah narrowly losing out to stablemate Cavalryman, and it’s Cavalryman whose name you will need to keep an eye out for in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Spring: he is likely to be aimed at the Melbourne Cup next, in the hope of cracking The Race That Stops A Nation for Sheikh Mohammed.
