Racing Odds: Europeans Arrive For Melbourne Spring
October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfWe knew they were coming, and there has been plenty of press interest in them and the impact they might have on the 2014 Melbourne Spring – along with more than a few punters keeping a close eye on where they’re standing in the Racing odds for the signature races of the Spring Festival. And now the Europeans are here: 19 imports from Europe landed safely on Australian shores last week, and will be by now starting to Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfLast year was all about Gai Waterhouse, the First Lady of Australian Racing – she did, after all, score her first Melbourne Cup win, and prove to herself and to everyone else who was watching (which was pretty much everyone) that she can train stayers. But Waterhouse has never had things all her own way in Australian Racing, and why should the 2014 Melbourne Spring be any different? Matching her pace for pace and winner for winner is Chris Waller: with a very good weekend under his belt last weekend and a trio of horses looking good in the Racing odds after it, could it be that the 2014 Melbourne Spring is shaping up to be all about Waller?

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfA horse that has a home in the hearts of more than a few fans of Australian Harness Racing, Baby Bling has a glittering career behind her – one that includes a spell at the very top of the tree, when she was considered without any real disagreement to be the best mare in Australia. There will be lots of punters interested in the Racing odds for the Ladyship Mile, then – lots of them because she’s got talent to spare, and lots more out of sentimentality, we suspect…
And you could forgive owner Harvey Kaplan more than a little dose of sentimentality himself over what must be one of his prize horses, if not the very best he has seen. It looks as though Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThere’s a big weekend in store at Caulfield, with the Caulfield Guineas and plenty more to enjoy, and lots to look at in the Racing odds for what will be not only a great day of Racing, but a really useful guide to how some of the big races still to come in the Melbourne Spring might shape up.
And there are a few key overseas prospects in action at Caulfield – all of them horses you’re going to want to keep an eye on. You’ll have to wait another week before you get your first chance to see red-hot Japanese imports Bande and Admire Rakti in action, but this weekend offers Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThere’s no doubting that Looks Like The Cat has all the talent in the world to go with that great name, and the Tony Gollan-trained 3-year old has been getting plenty of attention in the Racing odds in the start of the 2014 Melbourne Spring. But he has run in two second places, in his last two races, both of them behind Rich Enuff – and who will be lining up with him again in the Caulfield Guineas?
That’s right: Rich Enuff is the favourite for the Caulfield Guineas, and Tony Gollan and the rest of the team behind Looks Like The Cat could be forgiven for being sick of the sight of him. But Gollan sounds like Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by TJ DilferThe NRL season is only just over, and the Rabbitohs only just crowned as champions after an emphatic Grand Final win, but already there will be many with their thoughts turning to the 2015 season. It’s always the way, of course, that just as soon as the players start their well-earned rest, we start to get a thirst for more NRL action, and we start looking over the NRL odds for next season to see if we can pick out an early bet or two.
Fortunately, there are plenty of markets and futures waiting for you at online bookies like Sportsbet, but there are lots of questions to be answered before the first games of the 2015 campaign, and before we can Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThere’s been a little something missing from the Melbourne Cup for the past few years. Not that we would necessarily have been able to put our finger on it on race day, and not that there haven’t been thrilling, dramatic Melbourne Cups over the past few years. But principally thanks to an outbreak of equine flu, there haven’t really been any Japanese stayers in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Cup, and that has been a loss for the Cup as much as it has been for Japanese Racing.
That’s set to change in 2014, though, with Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfHe’s the punters’ choice for the Caulfield Guineas, and he’s sitting as the favourite in the Racing odds as of today, with odds of $2.50 beside his name on Sportsbet. And Rich Enuff has got Read the rest of this entry »

October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfBeautide, the Tasmanian Pacer, was named the 2014 Australian Harness Racing Horse of the Year last month, and it’s an award that rounds out a very good year indeed for Beautide and for his trainer James Rattray. There’s a Miracle Mile coming up that you need to keep an eye on the Racing odds for – Beautide will inevitably feature, and it sounds like Rattray is looking forward to the prospect: ‘the trial behind Suave Stuey Lombo has topped him off nicely and off the back of that he is Read the rest of this entry »

October 8th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThe Bart Cummings Stakes at Flemington last weekend was supposed to be a return to action for stayer Ethiopia that helped him ease back into racing after a spell of decent length out in Western Australia. He was shaping up to be a contender in the Melbourne Cup Racing odds if everything went according to plan, and trainer Pat Carey was pretty upbeat about the injury troubles that have dogged Ethiopia: ‘he had two runs in the autumn and he pulled up sore and he went home to Perth where he spelled and just started Read the rest of this entry »
