Racing Odds: A Melbourne Farewell For Slade Power
July 2nd, 2014 by Pom de TurfIt was a good week at Royal Ascot for trainer Eddie Lyman, with Slade Power winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and adding another piece of lustre to a great career – throw in King’s Stand Stakes and Queen Mary Stakes wins by Sole Power and Anthem Alexander into the mix, and you can see why Lyman was a happy man as the Ascot Week wrapped up.
But what Lyman wanted to talk about was a possible trip to the Melbourne Spring with Slade Power, and a run in the VRC Sprint Classic that would most likely be the end of his racing career. It seems that the logistics have been discussed and can be made to work, and that Lyman is eager: ‘it will be the last race of his career. He’s favourite for the July Cup and hopefully he can deliver but regardless of that he will go to Melbourne. I hear you have got a very good sprinter [Lankan Rupee] over there but we’ll give it a go. We’ve been doing a bit of research into him and he might not be Black Caviar but he’s very, very good and he’s going to be a hard nut to crack. We’re not afraid to lose, so we’re going to give it a go. I think Slade Power will love the track in Melbourne.’
It could be that Eddie Lyman loves it over here, too, and that hopefully we’ll see a lot more of him and his horses in the Melbourne Spring. There was a strong foreign connection in the Melbourne Cup last year, and that certainly adds interest and excitement to the spectacle. We’re all for it, and we’re hoping that Slade Power isn’t the only foreign raider on Aussie soil come the spring…
