Racing Odds: Can Gai Waterhouse Win The Cup Again?

July 18th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

It was a great day for Australian Racing fans when the first lady of Racing in Australia, Gai Waterhouse, scored her first Melbourne Cup win with Fiorente. But she won’t be resting on her laurels, by any stretch of the imagination, and when you’re looking at the Racing odds at the other end of the link, have a look out for the name Tres Blue, who might just be the horse to spark dreams of a Waterhouse double…

Tres Blue ran in last year’s Melbourne Cup, but it was far from the ideal run, shrouded in controversy and ending in disappointment. There was talk of a restricted medication given to on the day of last year’s Melbourne Cup, and his run was definitely below what was expected of him: he finished a good fifty lengths behind the winner Fiorente. But it looks like Tres Blue is a prospect that’s improving all the time, and after a light Autumn campaign, he’s a little heavier and a little bit closer to being ready for the big race. Of course, it’s not certain what form his preparations will take for the Spring Season, but Bruce Slade is on top of the situation: ‘the weights and things will decide whether we need to win races to get him into the Cup or whether we can just take him through a preparation that sort of culminates in the Melbourne Cup. He will be right on the brink of being guaranteed a start or not and the weights will make a big difference as to where we go with him. Gai is very keen to have the majority of his preparation in Melbourne.’

A light Autumn campaign was the right preparation for Fiorente, and saw Gai Waterhouse scoop her first Melbourne Cup win, so we’re not going to go out on a limb and say that it won’t work for another of her prospects. What we are going to do, though, is look out for the name Tres Blue when we’re going over the Racing odds
