Melbourne Spring Racing Odds: Lucia Valentina’s Options
August 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfWe’ve recently drawn attention to the Caulfield Cup as the most likely destination for Green Moon (see that post here), and the worthy veteran will hopefully get the chance to show his class on October 18th. But the reality is that there will be rising talent out to make his owners and trainers regret the decision to aim him at the Caulfield Cup, and one of those will likely be promising filly Lucia Valentina: check out the Racing odds for the Caulfield Cup by following the link!
Lucia Valentina is a Group 1 winner – the Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill in April – and trainer Kris Lees is pleased with her at this stage, he told Racing Victoria. That win at Rosehill meant that Lucia Valentina was a popular bet for the Australian Oaks, but she was unable to make that another win, despite making up plenty of ground on the winning pair. The plan for this year most likely includes the Caulfield Cup and also the Cox Plate, but you would think that Lucia Valentina will be a Melbourne Cup prospect in the future if all goes well. Lees sounds like he’s taking a cautious approach with her: ‘she’d had a lot of racing before she’d come to me and a pretty arduous calendar year, so she’s probably put on 25kgs which she needed to do. I think I’ll take a similar path as what Chris Waller did with Royal Descent last year through the Turnbull Stakes. That will then tell us whether she’s up to that grade. She’ll be nominated for all of the features and we’ll just see how she comes up. You’re always a little bit skeptical about three-year-old fillies in their first season against open company.’
So, with nominations likely for a clutch of big races for the Spring Season, you’ll see the name Lucia Valentina appear often in the Racing odds for the Caulfield Cup, the Cox Plate and possibly the Melbourne Cup, too. We’ll be keeping an eye out.
