Racing Odds: Melbourne Spring For Jessy Belle?

August 12th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

Jessy Belle looked very impressive, by all accounts, on her way to winning the Sportingbet Handicap at Moonee Valley at the weekend, and it’s a strong win that has her trainer’s thoughts turning towards the Melbourne Spring, and so we’re going to be keeping an eye on the Racing odds to see if she starts to appear…

That win in the Sportingbet was her fifth in twelve starts, and she clearly enjoys the surroundings at Moonee: that was her second win in two starts over 1600m there. On board for that win was Chris Symons, and he had nothing but praise for the mare under him: ‘she naturally begins so well but it was the worst case scenario to lead. But I wasn’t going to pull her molars out trying to pull her back. Luke knew she was the best horse in the race, I knew she was the best horse in the race and I had no real instructions other than to just to let her find her rhythm.’

He’s referring to trainer Luke Oliver, who’s the man in charge of Jessy Belle’s training, and the man who will have to decide when and if she can make the step up in class to the big races in the Melbourne Spring: ‘she’s not the sort of horse to run away from a field like that, but she was too strong. Every time we’ve raised the bar she has stepped up and I’ve had less talented horses than her be very competitive in stakes races before. She’s won three races at Moonee Valley now, but in saying that she’s pretty versatile and there’s a few mares mile races over the spring which we can look at now.’

Wherever Oliver decides to aim Jessy Belle, we expect her to feature in the Racing odds – she’s got plenty of talent, and she might be worth backing in the right races…
