AFL 2014 Rising Star Pre-Season Odds

March 5th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

The Rising Star is an award that’s well worth keeping an eye on over the course of the season, as the youngsters coming up through the ranks battle it out for the coveted medal. And it’s not just a nice piece of bling for the best young player of the year, or a great line on his CV: the side that contains the winner of the Rising Star can be confident that they’re getting the most out of the fresh faces in the squad, and that can be a key factor in making a season into a success.

Last year’s winner was Jaeger O’Meara, who was part of a positive year for Gold Coast, and part of a developing side that will hope to improve even further in 2014. Last year’s Brownlow Medal winner Gary Ablett is still leading that Suns side in 2014, and O’Meara will want to back up his Rising Star season with another massive contribution, but they’re clearly doing something right at Gold Coast, as the favourite to win the Rising Star Award in 2014 is Suns youngster Jack Martin. At $4.50, he’s ahead in the bookies’ eyes by a good stretch – a lot might depend on his likely debut in Round One, but he might be worth snapping up at those odds, especially as the nominations come rolling in, and even more so if he makes a big impact at Gold Coast this season.

Also right in the running are Brodie Grundy at Collingwood and Luke McDonald at North Melbourne. Grundy has form from last season – he was the Round 22 nomination – that might make him a tempting prospect for a bet at $8.00, and Luke McDonald will want to make a real splash at North Melbourne as he sets himself in his father’s footsteps: he’s a $12.00 to take the 2014 Rising Star Award.
