AFL: Can Gold Coast Beat $7.00 Odds?
March 25th, 2014 by TJ DilferRound One of the 2014 AFL season has given us plenty of talking points, not least the strong challenge that Hawthorn will be able to mount on the pennant for a second season on the bounce – an incredibly difficult thing to do, as we’ve seen over recent years. They were imperious in their season opener, though, and they finished forty points clear of Brisbane Lions (incidentally the last team to win back-to-back titles) in a game that will have given them plenty of momentum going into their game on Friday night – check out our preview here: Hawthorn vs Essendon odds…
But Friday’s game – even though it features the premiers – will likely be just an appetizer for a busy weekend of AFL action that fans will already be looking forward to getting their teeth into. There are four games hitting your TV screen over the course of the afternoon, but you’ll have to pick one of the last two to record and watch back – a difficult choice, we reckon. Gold Coast are a developing team with high hopes in 2014, but they’re the $7.50 outsiders when they run out against Freemantle on Friday night – with Freemantle getting $1.08, it could be that there will be lots of neutrals switching their viewing choice if this one looks one-sided right from the outset. The other option will be a game that the bookies have picked as a much closer one: Sydney are the $1.43 favourites to beat Collingwood, who are getting odds of $2.80 on Sportsbet right now…
Before the double header, you’ve got a couple of games that you can just settle in and enjoy. First up, St Kilda will be wary of a GWS side that got a dream start to their season against near neighbours the Swans, and there will be some determination in the Saints camp to bring the Giants down to size. St Kilda are coming off the back of a win of their own, and they’ll know that although the season is very young, two wins from two gives them good momentum. GWS go in as favourites at $1.80, whilst you’ll see odds of $2.00 for St Kilda. The other game sees similar sorts of odds – it could be that they are both good ones to watch! The last two Showdowns have been close-run things that have gone the way of the Power, and Adelaide are the outsiders again at $2.15. With a win behind them in Round One, you would think that the balance is tipped towards Port Adelaide, who are a $1.70 bet, but these two sides will be busting a gut to get the win!
