AFL: Melbourne Face Long Odds Against Leaders Hawthorn

August 7th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

On paper, there’s a one-sided contest in store on Saturday, and a chance for the ladder leaders Hawthorn to consolidate their position at the top – they’re only ahead on percentage, and a run out against Melbourne could be just the thing to help with that: the Dees are languishing in second-last place, and they could have a tough weekend in prospect. That won’t worry the Hawks at all – they want to make the most of the Round 20 odds in their favour to shore up a good percentage, because they’ve got Fremantle, Geelong and Collingwood coming up.

It will be heartbreaking for Gold Coast fans if an injury to their talismanic captain Gary Ablett robs them of their finals dream in 2014, but it isn’t out of reach yet. They managed to grab a win last time out against strugglers St Kilda, but they’ll want another in Round 22, and they face another stern test against Carlton. They go into the game with the longer odds, but are you writing off the Suns?

Port Adelaide probably aren’t in any danger of losing out on a finals spot, but they’ll have their eyes on Fremantle ahead of them in fourth – and their Saturday clash with Sydney is a great opportunity to prove to themselves and to all the watching pundits that they can take on the big sides in the finals. We’ll have to wait and see…

Then, on Sunday the pressure is on the Crows to keep their finals hopes alive by winning again when they take on Brisbane, and there’s a close game in prospect between Collingwood and West Coast. Both of those will be absolutely vital in the scrap for the finals places, and that means huge pressure on players and coaches, so anything could happen!
