AFL Odds: After The Draft
December 12th, 2014 by TJ DilferSo the draft has been and gone, and pundits and fans can start to ponder in earnest how they think the 2015 season will shape up for their own clubs and for everyone else’s. It was the usual compelling mix of hype, regulation picks and unexpected ones, but where does it leave things in terms of the AFL odds for the new season?
There were some interesting talking points that came up, without wanting to go into too much detail of the sometimes confusing and often brain-teasing draft process. There looked to the untrained eye to be a shortage of ruckmen picked up over the course of the draft, but that follows on from the trend set last year, we suppose. It’s worth bearing in mind, though, as the 2015 season hots up – if the big men end up playing key roles in key games, then it could be a talking point. Elsewhere there were some interesting decisions made – for example, the Suns picking up Peter Wright – that will themselves be worth keeping tabs on. Only time will really tell who made the canny choices in the draft for the 2015 season, of course, but it looked like it was a good, balanced crop of players, and it looked like there were a few clubs who were able to shore up their rosters against future injury woes. Fatigue and the inevitable wear that an incredibly physical game like Aussie Rules can have on a group of players was an important factor in the 2014 season, as it always is – especially in the closing stages when things went right down to the wire. We get the feeling that the people making the draft decisions for the coming year want to make sure their outfits keep firing on all cylinders right to the last game of the season.
Time will tell if the new recruits will make the difference in 2015 – and in the meantime we’ve got all the AFL odds you’ll need to decide if you’re going to be putting money down at this early stage…
