AFL Odds: Finals Dreams Fading For Gold Coast?
August 12th, 2014 by TJ DilferThere were some fine margins in Round 20, but at the cutting edge of an AFL season, those fine margins can make all the difference. It was a miss that could have brightened a Freemantle day that has pundits talking about the fine line between victory and failure this week, but there have been so many over the course of the season that it’s difficult to keep track of whose luck has been good, and whose fans will look back at a 2014 season of might-have-beens. It’s not over yet, of course, and we’ve got all the Round 21 odds you’ll need for a busy weekend.
The Dockers were agonisingly close to Geelong on the scoreboard in the last round, and they will be rueing the missed opportunities that saw the points go begging. More ruthless pundits will be saying that those are the games they will need to win to be considered true Grand Final contenders, but they remain in the top four, with Port Adelaide a win adrift, and so they will have a chance to prove the doubters wrong at the business end of the season.
Port Adelaide, meanwhile, are having some serious troubles at just the wrong time, not least of all piled on by Syndey last weekend. The Power showed such promise in an incredibly strong start to the season that they’re still in the mix for the finals, but they simply can’t afford to play badly from this point onwards and still hope to be competitive. They have Gold Coast in Round 21, in a game that the Suns simply must win. They could do with West Coast beating Essendon on the same afternoon, but if Saturday isn’t a win for the Gold Coast boys, then they will almost certainly miss out on their dream of finals footie, and they will carry the tag of a side who are toothless without their talismanic captain. We’re not sure which is worse.
Also on Saturday, Sydney are strong favourites to pick up more points in a one-sided affair against St. Kilda, and you’re probably better served looking over those Round 21 odds for better prospects than that one. We’ve got plenty of AFL odds and futures for you, too, of course, as we get to the crisis point of the season for more than a few teams…
