AFL Odds: First Finals Week Previews
September 4th, 2014 by TJ DilferThis weekend sees the first shots of the 2014 finals fired, and the Swans, minor premiers in the regular season, are in action against fourth-placed Fremantle in the first of Saturday’s two games. We’ve got all the AFL odds you need if you’re looking to back one of the sides in action this weekend, but who will it be?
Sydney go into their final as the favourites over Fremantle, with odds of $1.45 right now on Sportsbet, but there will be pressure on them to justify that minor premiership with a run in the finals. They’ve got the players to win it, and they fought hard to overcome a sluggish start to the season, so the bookies are backing them even if they still have their doubters all around the country. Key Dockers absences will help the Swans here, with both Luke McPharlin and Michael Johnson lined up for back surgery and missing out on the finals campaign…
Saturday’s other finals is an elimination, and it’s Essendon facing the longer odds as they go into the game, with $2.20 beside their name as of today. It’s game on in finals week, though, and there won’t be many pundits writing off the Bombers on Saturday. The Kangaroos, meanwhile, will be looking at this as the first step on the road to a premiership – they’ve beaten four of the five teams who finished above them on the ladder in 2014, so they’ll think that if they’re in a final, then they’re a chance to win it. We’ll see!
Then, on Sunday, the team that looked like they might have the minor premiership sewn up before a mid-season slump saw them fall out of the top four take on the fairytale Tigers, who are on the back of an incredible nine wins that has seen them barge their way into the finals and into a date with destiny against the Power. The Tigers won the last meeting between these teams, too, so they’ll be coming into this one with all the confidence in the world – the sort of confidence that only a string of wins can give you. Check out the AFL odds for this weekend to see if the Tigers can continue their incredible run, or if this is the weekend when they run out of steam…
