AFL: Odds On A Swans Minor Premiership?

July 8th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

Round 17 is here, and the Swans and the Dockers keep winning, while Port Adelaide were pipped by Essendon, and the Suns dug their nails into the fabric of the top eight ahead of a game against the Western Bulldogs that they’ll be targeting for points, especially with near-neighbours Adelaide and Essendon facing tough fixtures at the weekend.

We keep getting closer to the point of no return, and the AFL odds are starting to show the bookies’ favourites for the finals and for the glory in the 2014 season. Port Adelaide are a $10.00 bet for the minor premiership now that they’ve lost that top spot and seemingly lost that knack of winning, too. The favourites are the Swans at odds of $1.72 as of right now on Sportsbet, and Fremantle are behind them at $4.00. It’s the same suspects, more or less, for the grand final, with Sydney and Fremantle your shortest odds, and Hawthorn, the Power and Geelong all in the mix. Getting to the final and winning it are different things, of course, and it’s the Swans and Fremantle who are seeing the shortest odds for a 2014 season that ends in triumph, at $3.50.

But all those sides are a couple of bad results away from disappointment, and there are plenty more teams who could be in the mix if a couple of wins come their way. Adelaide have threatened to look like a side that can beat absolutely anyone on their day, and they’ve got another chance to put their names forward on Friday night. A win over Hawthorn wouldn’t just keep the pressure on the Suns (who are just above them, in eighth spot), but it would be a real statement of where the Crows are in the season. It’s time for a statement like that, their fans will be thinking, and there’s no better opportunity likely to come their way: the Crows have a decent run in to the end of the regular season, which makes Friday all the more important…
