AFL: Port Adelaide Defy The Odds
April 29th, 2014 by TJ DilferSix rounds down and the 2014 AFL season has already thrown us our fair share of upsets, epic clashes and incredible games. Now’s the time to get hold of all your odds for Round Seven, but also we’re going to take a moment to have a look at a few sides and their odds of making 2014 a winning campaign – and don’t forget that Friday night sees Carlton and Collingwood meet at the MCG for a fixture with plenty of smouldering history…
After what could be a season-defining win against Geelong, the Power find themselves topping the ladder at the start of Round Seven, and it’s some well-deserved success, especially after a strong performance in the last round that saw Port Adelaide pull clear of the Cats in the third quarter, and hold off any thoughts of a comeback to win by a similar margin. The Power are now genuine title contenders, according to the bookies, and they’re looking at odds of $8.00 to win the pennant. They’re right in the mix with Fremantle, who are a $7.00 bet, and Sydney at $9.00. All of those sides make a pack that’s on the heels of the favourites, Geelong at $5.50, and, ahead of them, Hawthorn at $3.20. We were interested to see that there are four sides getting significantly shorter odds than anyone else to finish in those top four spots: the bookies have Hawthorn at odds of $1.10 to finish in the top four, Geelong at $1.30, Port Adelaide at $1.50 odds and Fremantle at $1.80. Seems like those are the sides to watch after the exchanges of the first six rounds, and it looks like it will be those four who have their sights set on the Grand Final and a win there. With that little look ahead (and into the crystal ball), it’s easy to forget that Round Seven is back underway on Friday night with a belter between two old rivals, Carlton and Collingwood. There’s been a bit of a resurgence at Carlton in the past couple of weeks, and they’ve seen two wins go into the books – and that won’t make it any easier if to lose to old rivals Collingwood on Friday. The odds are against them for the big game at the MCG, but if they can beat those odds (they’re a $3.75 bet on Sportsbet right now) it will give them some incredible momentum after a tough start to the season. The Pies, at the other end of the ladder, are just behind the three leaders, and will be keen to press their claim as title contenders. A win over Carlton always has a sweetness of its own, too: Collingwood are a $1.27 bet to win it and take the points.
