AFL Round One: Gold Coast $2.45 Outsiders Against Richmond
February 6th, 2014 by TJ DilferYou’ll see Gary Ablett’s name around on these boards, and he’ll likely be in contention for a medal or two come the end of the season – have a look here for our view on his Brownlow Medal hopes in 2014 – but as the Gold Coast captain he’s got even more pressure to perform coming his way. There’s a feeling that this year will have to include involvement in the season’s climax for it to be regarded as a success for the Suns, and Ablett has his sights on between 11 and 13 wins in order to get his team there.
He’ll hope that at least a couple of those wins come in the first weeks of the season, in spite of a less-than-ideal draw for the Suns. They face both of last year’s finalists before week six comes around, and they’re $2.45 outsiders in their first game against Richmond. The bookies have it as one of the closer contests of the opening round, though, and they’re giving Richmond $1.53 to take the win. But if Gold Coast can beat those odds, they’ll go forward knowing that they could easily capitalise with wins over Freemantle and Brisbane, and that a trip to the MCG holds fewer fears than once it would have after they beat the Demons there by 10 points last year.
If they can get away to a good start, Gold Coast’s improving squad might make those odds of $67.00 to lift the pennant seem long, but there’s probably more value in backing skipper Ablett’s ambitions to finish in the top 4 at $15.00, while the Suns will be disappointed if they’re outside the top 8: they’re $3.50 to make it, and 1.30 to miss out…
