AFL: Saturday’s Games Previewed – St Kilda Face Long Odds
April 16th, 2014 by TJ DilferRound Five gets underway in earnest on Saturday, and it’s the start of a busy Easter weekend of AFL fixtures – get all your Round Five odds by following the link – that’ll see us doing our best to catch all the action. Look out for some long odds for St Kilda to overcome if they want to slow their slide on the ladder, and what could be a close game between West Coast and Port Adelaide.
First up is another one that could be close – Collingwood are the favourites going into their clash with North Melbourne, but not by all that much: you’ll get $1.83 for the Pies, while the Roos are a $2.00 bet. The recent history between these two is quite close, and you can expect more of the same, especially since this one could have some positive effects on the ladder for whoever wins it – points from this one could take North Melbourne into the top four, while a win for Collingwood would likely see them in the top eight for the first time in the 2014 campaign.
Then it’s Sydney and Fremantle in the Preliminary Final replay from last season. There won’t be too many good memories of that night in the Swans camp, and they’ll want to get one back on the Dockers, but that’s going to be a tough task for them on Saturday. It was the Freo defensive effort that blew the Swans away last season, and they don’t look to have slackened off much in that department in 2014. It’s early to say that Sydney’s season is on the line in this game, but a win at $2.20 odds would definitely get things going in the right direction for them. Fremantle are a $1.67 bet.
Looking at the odds facing a young St Kilda side, you’d think they wouldn’t go into their game Saturday against Essendon with too much expectation of coming away with the points – and the odds are steep at $7.50. But the Saints have shown a bit more edge over the last month or so, and there are some things going down (or coming up) at Essendon that might swing things back the way of St Kilda – we’re by no means medically inclined, but a six-day turnaround and an outbreak of ‘gastro-flu’ (or whatever it is they’ve got) doesn’t sound like the best preparation for an AFL game. Could it be that Essendon’s $1.09 odds look a little short and the Saints might be worth a flutter at $7.50?
And finally to West Coast and the Power, who bring your Saturday to a close with what could be a cracker. Port Adelaide will bring plenty of momentum with them into this one after a good win over the Lions, but they go in as $1.95 outsiders. The Eagles are looking to bounce back from a defeat by Geelong that they’d prefer to forget as quickly as possible, but the bookies still have them as the $1.87 favourites to do just that.
