Brown Panther Sets Sights On Melbourne Cup
June 27th, 2014 by Pom de TurfAfter a brave run in the Gold Cup at Ascot this week, Brown Panther’s trainers and owner are daring to look ahead at a repeat appearance in the Melbourne Cup. It might be early doors, but the Cup is such a big race that you can understand plenty of forward planning. And after a decent run in last year’s race that saw him finish in eighth place, you’d think Brown Panther would be a worthy addition to the field.
‘Brave’ was the word to describe Brown Panther’s performance at Ascot, and owner Michael Owen seemed pleased with the run: ‘he has been beaten by better horses but has still made us immensely proud. He always tries his best and has the heart of a lion. This was his big target for the first half of the season. The Melbourne Cup is an option, as we had a great experience there last year and it’s something we’ll have to sit down and discuss.’ Brown Panther looked like a winning chance as the race entered its closing stages, but seemed to tire and eventually came in fourth. Trainer Tom Dascombe had a more realistic take on the run by Brown Panther, which leaves him still without a Group 1 win, but he’s not ruling out a trip to Australia, either: ‘we’ve just been beaten in a Group 1 so we need to go home and think about it. We are deflated, but he has done his best and that’s all he can do.’
So, whilst it might be a little too early to really start assessing those Melbourne Cup odds, it might interest you to know that Brown Panther is at $34.00 odds on Sportsbet right now – and you can see lots more Racing Odds if you follow the link, too!
