He wasn’t our best player in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup tournament, but he put in some powerful performances in Germany – and was part of a side that stood up heroically to the Brazilians and the Italians – that made him a popular figure with Australia fans. And he went on to have an impressive career with the Socceroos, a key part of the generation that many have suggested has as good a claim as any to be the best that Australia has seen.
