Collingwood, Facing A Tough Start, Are $13.00 For The Pennant
February 7th, 2014 by TJ DilferDane Swan is set to stay at Collingwood for at least another couple of years, we learned this week, and that’s a real positive for the club. Swan, already a Brownlow Medal holder from the 2011 season, is also a hopeful for the Medal again this year – he’s a $13.00 bet on Sportsbet right now – and he’ll add quality to an already-strong Collingwood outfit.
But the Magpies are facing a tough start to their 2014 campaign, with some pundits predicting that they’ll go into week six with only a single win beside their name. They’re outsiders at $2.25 in their season opener against Freemantle, then face stern tests against Sydney, Geelong and North Melbourne. There’s a fixture against Richmond in there, too, that they haven’t lost since back in 2007, but that win won’t be enough to make coach Nathan Buckley happy if it comes on its own.
And the start to the season could be crucial in the race to the finals. With four defeats in the first five games, Collingwood will feel up against it as they push for a place in the finals, and their odds of $13.00 could start to feel short. They’ll still be competitive, most likely, though, so you might see value in a $3.50 bet for the Pies to finish in the top 4, or in $1.62 for them to fall in the top 8. If a tough start to the 2014 season makes you think this will be a rough year for Collingwood fans, will you be betting at $2.30 that they miss the top 8?
