Cricket Odds: New Captains Please…
December 18th, 2014 by G WaldorfAfter some dire predictions of a one-sided Test series between Australia and India, even going into the last day of the first Test, we weren’t at all sure what we were going to get from the tourists. What we got, in the end, was a compelling final day that had all three results still on the cards right up to the last session. And it’s set up a fascinating series in prospect, and one that will likely throw up some interesting Cricket odds over the course, too…
And there are a good number of very interesting sub-plots as the second Test gets underway – resulting in the bookies plumping for the draw as the most likely result at the Gabba. There are two new captains taking charge for the second Test, after Michael Clarke headed off for scans on yet another injury, and MS Dhoni returned from his own injury troubles to rejoin his India side that had performed so bravely without him. The Aussies haven’t lost at the Gabba in a couple of decades, and there are a couple of batsmen especially bringing such good form into the second Test that you’d be tempted to back the home side again, even at longer odds than the visitors: both new skipper Steve Smith and pugnacious opener David Warner are more than likely to add significantly to their runs totals for the series in Brisbane.
But it’s a mark of how well the Indians stood up to real pressure on the final day of the first Test that it’s they who have the shorter odds for the win. Add in the loss of Michael Clarke from the Australia batting line-up, and Ryan Harris’s absence, too, and you might think India have more than a sniff here. You can see from the Cricket odds at the end of the link there that India have odds of $3.15 for the win, where their hosts are getting $4.35. Can you see the defences of fortress Gabba breached by this Indian side? They might be worth backing at those odds!
