England vs Australia: First ODI
January 10th, 2014 by G WaldorfYou couldn’t have a couple of teams in two more different places. Alistair Cook’s England will be lacking confidence, to say the least, going into an ODI series so soon on the back of a 5-0 Ashes series result. We’ve yet to see what the look of the England eleven that takes the field at the MCG on the 12th will be, but we’ve a feeling that there could be some fresh faces in there, and more than a few Englishmen with a point to prove. And why not? The tour have gone pretty much as badly as it could have done so far, so why not give the youngsters a chance to make a name for themselves?
One thing in England’s favour could well be the absence of Mitchell Johnson, whose impact on the Ashes series was nothing less than spectacular right from the start. He’ll be rested for the first game, but he’s still the favourite at $4.00 to be the Australian bowler who takes the most wickets in the series. Working against the tourists will be the enormous momentum that the Aussies bring with them from a Test series that ended in a 5-0 whitewash, but the inclusion of some young, unscarred players might go some way to redressing that. Also cast your mind back, though, to the recent Australian tour of India, and the incredible cricket played by both teams in a series that the Aussies were unlucky to lose. The odds of an England win at the MCG are $2.18, and might be a little short. You’ll get $1.68 for Australia to leave Melbourne with another win behind them. The outrights might not be where the real value is, though: there are plenty more tempting markets on Sportsbet right now – you can get to them by following the link, and if you need more information, then head to our latest cricket odds…
