Luis Suarez, beggars can’t be choosers
August 7th, 2013 by G WaldorfLuis Suarez has told two British newspapers that Liverpool promised to let him leave this closed season if the Reds failed to qualify for the Champions League (they didn’t, finishing a rubbish 7th), and it is Liverpool not Luis who are to blame for the current situation. What a way to thank the club that stayed loyal to him after Evra-Gate and Bitey-Man-Gate.
There are definitely two sides to Luis Suarez. There is no denying the player’s ability, scoring 81 goals in 110 games for Ajax before the big money move to Liverpool where is has scored 38 goals in 77 games. He’s also scored and undeniably world class 35 goals on 68 games for Uruguay. That’s a great record. However, he has also missed 25% of all Liverpool games through suspension. Twenty five percent!
The racism incident with Patrice Evra and Manchester United and Liverpool’s subsequent public support of their player boarded on incredible and threatened to undermine the so called ‘traditional family club’ image Liverpool claim to have, but they supported the player. They also publically supported Suarez when he fancied some Branislav Ivanović arm flesh and took a bite of the Chelsea player.
However in the world according to Luis, it is he who has been poorly treated. It is Luis Suarez who is the victim and Luis Suarez who should be permitted to engineer a move to another club.

Suarez has told The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph that Liverpool “promised” he would be allowed to leave this British summer if they didn’t qualify for Europe. He goes on to add “I gave absolutely everything last season. Now all I want is for Liverpool to honour our agreement,”
The interviews, given to Spanish-based journalists from the two newspapers, include Suarez claiming: “Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I’d be allowed to go.”
With Arsenal having made two bids, both rejected, I don’t imagine Suarez quite had them in mind when he envisaged leaving. I would think he was more fancying the white of Madrid, or the stripes of Barcelona, than the red and white of Arsenal. But beggars can’t be choosers, and whilst Arsenal are one of Liverpool’s main rivals for the EPT 4th place spot, it would be amusing to see Suarez playing his trade at a club like Arsenal, especially if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Suarez continues his whinge with “I am 26, I need to be playing in the Champions League. I feel I have done enough to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of my career. Now there is an option for me to do that and I want very much to take it,” he said.
“I don’t feel betrayed but the club promised me something a year ago, just as I promised them that I would stay and try everything possible to get us into the Champions League.”
Laughably, doing enough to earn Champions League football includes biting two players (PSV’s Otman Bakkal was the first player to be bitten by “The Cannibal of Ajax”), using racist language towards a fellow professional and diving so often Uruguay are rumoured to be adding him to their springboard rosta for the Rio Olympics.
Personally I hope Liverpool sell Suarez to Arsenal and with a very good Spurs team being put together, one that might soon have another $200m to spend on players, I can see Arsenal really struggling to finish 4th….and how sweet Liverpool’s revenge would be. Not that Liverpool deserve it, they should have shipped out the player after the racism incident, after-all that’s what a proper ‘family’ club would have done.
You can back Arsenal at odds of $2.20 to finish outside the top 4 with bookmaker Sportsbet. This is a decent bet, but offers little value. I think the better value bet is to back Liverpool to finish in the bottom 10 of the EPL at great odds of $18.00
