Melbourne Cup Odds and Tips: Damien Oliver will ride Fiorente
October 14th, 2013 by Pom de TurfMelbourne Cup favourite Fiorente will see a change of jockey for the Cox Plate, and for the Melbourne Cup, with Nash Rawiller losing out to big-race specialist Damien Oliver. After criticism of Rawiller’s run in the Turnbull Stakes that saw Fiorente finish fourth – it was felt that he held her back, and didn’t give her enough chance to win it – it’ll be down to Oliver to make good on Fiorente’s potential come November 5th.
And he’s got some good results behind him, so Gai Waterhouse and the rest of the team behind Fiorente can reasonably expect to see him do a great job. Oliver has a good-looking trophy cabinet already, with four Calufield Cup wins to his name, winning rides in the Cox Plate on Dane Ripper and Northerly, and Melbourne Cup wins on Doriemus and Media Puzzle: his nomination to occupy Fiorente’s saddle won’t be hurting her odds at all. She’s still the favourite as of today on Sportsbet, sitting at $6.00 with Hawkspur and Puissance De Lune trailing behind at $7.50 and $8.00 respectively.
