Melbourne Cup Odds: Down To Forty
October 30th, 2014 by Pom de TurfWe’re starting to get excited about the 2014 Melbourne Cup. It was inevitable really, and it shouldn’t be a surprise, we suppose, because it happens at about this time every year, but the reduction of the field to forty has kept us checking those Racing odds regularly, and busily keeping an eye out for all the breaking news to bring it to you in these pages.
With the second acceptances hot off the press, we’re starting to size up the way the race might go – and we’re not the only ones by any means. There are pundits out there busily making predictions, but we’re not going to commit ourselves in black and white just yet – suffice it to say that there are some high-quality horses in that list of forty, and there are more than a few that will likely have a say in the race, and lots who could plausibly win it, as well.
It’s still Admire Rakti who’s the horse to beat, if only judging by the Racing odds and an imperious Caulfield Cup win, but the press will make plenty of the number of overseas raiders in the list of second acceptances. We make it a good dozen as they stand today, and the thing to note is that those dozen are horses who could easily be the ones making the headlines on November 5th – this is shaping up to be a Melbourne Spring whose big races have been heavily influenced and even won by imported horses, and the Melbourne Cup could easily go the same way. Whatever happens, you can be sure that we’ll be tracking all the news stories hitting the wires between now and then, so check back in with us for more!
