Melbourne Cup Odds: Umeda Arrives To Oversee Admire Rakti Preparations

October 8th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

With the Melbourne Cup getting closer, we’re starting to see the international horses whose names will be cropping up in the Racing odds for the big race – and for a few of the races between now and November 4th, as well – touching down in Australia and, after seeing out their quarantine requirements, starting to get into the serious work of preparing for their Melbourne Spring races. But it isn’t just famous horses making their way from all over the world to our shores – each and every Melbourne Spring campaign involves serious numbers of people working away behind the scenes, and a few high-profile trainers, too.

One of those high-profile trainers is Tomoyuki Umeda, who has made the trip from Japan to lend a hand in making classy imported stayer Admire Rakti ready to contest the 2014 Melbourne Cup. Admire Rakti is the top-weight for The Race That Stops A Nation, and he comes to the 2014 edition of the race with a pretty serious reputation behind him – including some signs last year that he’s more than up to standard. Racing Victoria’s Leigh Jordan is the man looking after the visitors to the Melbourne Spring: ‘Admire Rakti looked good. Both the Japanese visitors, Admire Rakti and Bande, have settled in well. They didn’t lose much weight on the flight from Japan via Singapore and they have eaten up well and are drinking well. Umeda walked the track and took a keen interest in everything and I think he is suitably impressed.’

A strong Melbourne Spring campaign from the two Japanese horses could be the catalyst for more of the compatriots to make the trip to Australia in future years, so all eyes will be on the two when they hit the track. Umeda has made the trip to Australia to give them both the best chance – and as you can see from the Racing odds we’ve got at the other end of that link, their chances are looking pretty good at the moment…
