Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Brown Panther Fires A Warning Shot
September 24th, 2014 by Pom de TurfSometimes you see a horse with a notable owner that struggles to come out of the shadow of their owner’s fame a little bit, and last year you could possibly have said that about Brown Panther, who is owned in part by ex England International footballer Michael Owen. But it’s probably less true now after Brown Panther registered his first Group 1 win a couple of weekends ago – and in some style, too!
Brown Panther made the trip to Australia for the Melbourne Spring last year, and it may well be that you see him in amongst the Racing odds for the 2014 Melbourne Cup, too. Especially after his convincing win in the Irish St Leger at Curragh. But the most significant thing about that win – obviously it’s a great day for trainers and owners both, but it was a win that always coming, you’d think, for a horse of such quality – was the field that Brown Panther beat home by more than six lengths. There were a few other Melbourne Cup hopefuls in the chasing pack, and beating them doesn’t just improve Brown Panther’s Melbourne Cup prospects – it possibly throws some plans for the horses he beat home into crisis.
So we’d keep an eye out for Brown Panther in the Racing odds, but also for the horses he beat at Curragh: Willing Foe, Pale Mimosa and Royal Diamond could all have a bit of work to do before they’re competitive in the 2014 Melbourne Cup…
