Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Red Cadeaux At His Highest Weight In 2014
September 26th, 2014 by Pom de TurfRed Cadeaux is a familiar horse to Australian punters, who have seen him in three Melbourne Spring campaigns already, and who will be excited at the prospect of seeing the veteran stayer come back for a record-breaking fourth Melbourne Cup. He’s going to be a feature of the Racing odds, too, and not just because he’s a familiar name, though the news coming out of Racing Victoria last week was interesting for Red Cadeaux, when the list of weights for the 2014 Melbourne Cup was published.
Red Cadeaux will carry the most weight he has ever carried in the Melbourne Cup if things stay as they were published last week for the 2014 race. The favourite at the moment, Gai Waterhouse’s The Offer, was given 56.5kg in the list, but Red Cadeaux is set to carry 57kg – more than he has carried on any previous attempt to win the Melbourne Cup, and a lot to carry for a horse who will be the oldest to win The Race That Stops A Nation if he can come home ahead of the field. Greg Carpenter, Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper, explains why the weights look high for Red Cadeaux and others: ‘under the Australian rules of racing I am obliged to release a top weight of 58kg, however with recent staying champions Fiorente, Dunaden and Americain now retired, there was no natural topweight so I’ve had to effectively lift weights 2kg for the majority of runners.’
It remains to be seen, of course, how the increased weight affects Red Cadeaux’s chances or the betting on him between now and the start of November – but you can be sure that he’ll be in the Racing odds come race day, and you can be sure he’ll get his share of backing…
