Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Simenon In Doubt

August 9th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

Green Moon is one veteran campaigner who will most likely be making the trip to Australia for the Melbourne Spring, and most likely aiming at the Caulfield Cup, but we’re hearing news that another veteran might be sidelined in 2014, and not feature at all in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Cup as we get closer to the big day…

Simenon’s owners face the prospect of a frustrating Melbourne Spring with their charge sidelined with a stress fracture that may or may not rule him out of the Melbourne Cup, which would have been the culmination of his Spring Campaign. It’s an injury he sustained in the process of winning the Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary, but that will be of little comfort to his handlers, or to trainer Willie Mullins: ‘he will not run in Galway; he got a stress fracture after Tipperary. He was a little stiff for a few days and he didn’t come right. I thought it was maybe the firm ground at the time, but it turns out he has a stress fracture above his right knee and will have six weeks off. It was great that the hurdles prize was there to be won and while it is disappointing, in the overall scheme of things it’s more of nuisance than anything else. I’ve no plans.’

We’re not sure we quite believe him that he has no plans at all, but we can understand him wanting to take things a day at a time with Simenon. This is a horse who finished fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup, so it will be painful not to have him fit again this year, but nothing’s set in stone yet, and you’ll see if you follow the link that Simenon is still in amongst the Racing odds for the Melbourne Cup. We’ll just have to wait and see!
