Melbourne Cup Racing Odds: Weights Released
September 24th, 2014 by Pom de TurfRacing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter faces a difficult task – by his own admission – to find the right top weight for the 2014 Melbourne Cup, and we might see a little bit of movement on the weights between now and the start of November. We’re likely to see a little bit of movement in the Racing odds, too, you would think, before the start of the The Race That Stops A Nation, so make sure you keep abreast of what’s happening by heading back here regularly…
The top weight in the list released last week is 58kg, and it will be Japanese prospect Admire Rakti who carries it. Admire Rakti might not have scored a win since the start of last year, but he comes to Australia with big expectations surrounding him, and Greg Carpenter reckons him a worthy top-weight. Red Cadeaux will be a familiar horse to Australian punters after an impressive three previous Melbourne Spring campaigns, and he will carry 57.5kg in his record-breaking fourth Melbourne Cup appearance. Green Moon and Fawkner, both trained by Lloyd Williams, will carry 56kg each in the 2014 edition of the Melbourne Cup – and it’s an interesting weight for Green Moon, especially, as it falls between the 54.5kg he carried when he won it the race in 2012 and the 57.5kg he had on board when he finished 21st in last year’s run.
Look out for Cavalryman, who is getting a good share of the attention at this early stage – he will carry 57kg if the list stays as it is. And just below him in that list are a clutch of horses who could have a say in the race: Dandino, Protectionist and Bande were all allocated 56.5kg in last week’s list of weights. But what of the early favourite, Gai Waterhouse’s The Offer? Well, he’s on that same 56.5kg, and, as you can see from the Racing odds we’ve got for you today, he’s still the favourite at the moment…
