Melbourne Spring Racing Odds: Happy Trails On Course
August 21st, 2014 by Pom de TurfHappy Trails is very much in the picture for the Cox Plate when it rolls around, and his is a name you’ll see in amongst those Racing odds for the Melbourne Spring. And his preparation is underway after a run in the Spring Stakes at Morphettville that was his first after coming back from a tendon injury.
It was his third year in a row at the Spring Stakes, so it’s pretty much business as usual as far as Spring Season preparations are concerned, and trainer Paul Beshara, speaking to the press before the race, was taking the long view: ‘he will line up. He had a trial last Friday, a little bit of a gallop this morning and he is cherry ripe. To me he would win anything; he is just a brainy, special horse. It is pretty hard to sort of say that because you can’t have him maximum fitness right now. He is at the start of his preparation and he has a long way to go. Each race has got to get him fitter until he hits his peak in that Cox Plate. At this stage of his preparation compared to last year, he would be about the same.’
Last year’s route through the Melbourne Spring saw Happy Trails run in the Memsie, the Underwood and the Turnbull Stakes before the Cox Plate – he won the Turnbull Stakes in 2013 and placed second (ahead of Fiorente) in the Cox Plate. So, if there’s a similar path ahead of his this year, you can expect to see him in the Racing odds for all of those races, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the tough 7-year-old in the placings for any or all of them!
