Melbourne Spring Racing Odds: Rebel Dane Out Of The Memsie Stakes
August 27th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThe field for the Memsie Stakes this weekend is looking strong, and it’s likely to be a great early indicator of the horses who are going to be bagging the wins and the headlines in the 2014 Melbourne Spring – not to mention having an effect on the Racing odds that you’ll see at the end of that link there.
But there’s one horse who won’t be making an appearance in the Memsie Stakes, and it’s a big disappointment not only for his trainer Gary Portelli, but for all the punters who were looking forward to seeing the promising 5-year-old in action. Rebel Dane is out of the Memsie Stakes. The cause is a stone bruise, apparently, and by the sound of it things could have been much worse, Portelli told the press: ‘we found the problem after trackwork (yesterday) morning. I was initially concerned he might have had a fetlock problem, but X-rays cleared him of any issue in his joints. He does have a stone bruise in the heel of his nearside front so he will miss a fast gallop. I think he will be right by Saturday but you can’t go into a Group 1 race without having the necessary preparatory work.’
A change of plans will be required for Rebel Dane, then, as the Melbourne Spring comes around, and it looks like he has lots of options open, but none of them as appealing as the Memsie Stakes would have been to him. You’ll have to keep an eye on the Racing odds for his name. Who knows, though? He might just bring something home for Portelli that he wasn’t expecting…
