NRL: Knights, Gold Coast Odds-On Favourites
March 12th, 2014 by TJ DilferIt’s shaping up to be a packed weekend of NRL action, and there’s plenty of compelling match-ups on offer, especially in the context of the first round of games, which threw up more than a few talking points and a couple of results that we didn’t necessarily predict. And Sunday night is going to be a great way to cap it all off (until Monday, that is!), with the Knights, Canberra, gold Coast and Wests Tigers all in action, and all looking for a good result to keep their season going or to get it going…
First up is a fixture between the Titans and the Tigers. The Tigers are looking for a fresh start this year after finishing 15th in 2013, but a defeat at the hands of the Dragons in Round One wasn’t on the ideal script for anyone at Wests. There were some positives to come out of the game for the Tigers, but they’re facing fairly long $3.50 odds on Sunday night, and they will already getting twitchy for a win if one doesn’t come at the weekend. Gold Coast, meanwhile, will be carrying all the momentum with them into Sunday’s game after a win over an injury-hit Sharks outfit last time out. If the Titans can start the 2014 season in the strong form they found at the back end of last season, they could have their sights on a finals berth. A win over Wests Tigers on Sunday will help, and they’re a $1.30 bet on Sportsbet right now to do just that…
The other game scheduled for Sunday is a clash between Newcastle Knights and Canberra Raiders, and an important one for both sides after losses in Round One. The Raiders were sixteen points to the good before they were hauled in by the Cowboys, and they’ve given the responsibility of bouncing back from that to the same squad that was named in Round One. It’s difficult to see what sort of return from the season would make Knights fans happy – their appearance in last year’s finals felt like a bit of a bonus, but having been in the mix last year, there’s a natural expectation again. If they get there, they could be a dangerous opponent for any side, but getting there will be the hard part. The Knights are the favourites for Sunday’s game, though, at $1.53 on Sportsbet right now, and a win over Canberra would be points in the bag – you’ll get $2.50 for the Raiders to deny them…
