NRL Odds: Roosters, Cowboys, Storm Go In As Favourites
September 11th, 2014 by TJ DilferFriday night sees a clash between the two nearly-men of the 2014 season, and both the Sea Eagles, who missed out on the minor premiership when they couldn’t find a win in the final round against the Cowboys, and the Rabbitohs, who could have claimed the minor premiership by beating the Roosters in Round 26, will have plenty to prove when they meet. We’ve got all the NRL odds for that one for you, of course, but there are three more games in the first week of the finals for you to watch and have a bet on…
On Saturday, it’s the minor premiers up first against the Panthers. That Penrith have managed to find some real consistency in the 2014 campaign has been very impressive, particularly given the long list of injuries to key players that has plagued them. They lost their last meeting with the Roosters, which was in Round 19, and you would think that the Sydney boys will be very strong in their own backyard, and a daunting prospect indeed. The Panthers will perhaps be looking back a little further, though, for inspiration – to a 2003 Grand Final in which the Panthers upset the Roosters to claim the premiership.
Then there’s a tasty bit of Queensland rivalry to get your teeth into. The Broncos and the Cowboys go head-to-head on Saturday night, and there will be plenty of Queenslanders glued to this one, we reckon. It’s hard to predict which way it will go, too – and that just adds a little relish to an already-appetising prospect in store. The Broncos have dominated their neighbours in the regular season in recent times, but the two most important games the two have played have gone to the Cowboys: finals wins for the Cowboys a decade ago and a couple of years past are the only finals meetings between these two, so North Queensland will come in thinking that they have the edge in the big games. And it’s Brisbane with the longer odds for this one, too, with $3.00 beside their names at Sportsbet right now…
Then, on Sunday, look out for the Storm against the Bulldogs: the Storm will go into this one as favourites with odds of $1.32, but they’ve got a mountain to climb if they’re going to claim a third NRL title. Under the new finals arrangements (longer-standing in the AFL than the NRL, in fairness), no team which finished outside the top four in the regular season has reached a Grand Final, let alone won it. That’s the task ahead of the Storm, who will be ambitious nonetheless, and who face the first hurdle against the Bulldogs at the weekend. Canterbury, of course, will want to punish those Storm fans who are looking past them at a potential Grand Final, and it was the Bulldogs who won the two regular season fixtures between these two: a tight one in Round 18, and a much less close game back in Round 4. Another win will see the Bulldogs take on whoever loses the Sea Eagles-Rabbitohs clash.
