Racing: Moody Betting On A Cox Plate Run For Dissident
July 25th, 2014 by Pom de TurfThis could easily have been a season that Dissident spent away from the racecourse, with some sizable offers coming the way of his owners that very nearly tempted them to give him the year off. But a few key retirements amongst the weight-for-age horses that would have been his competition have persuaded his owners to give him a chance at the Cox Plate in 2014 – and the Racing odds show him as a real chance at this early stage…
There was reportedly as much as AU$5million on the table for Dissident to stud, and plenty of interest from New Zealand in particular, but the weight of statistical analysis apparently tipped the decision towards another season of racing. According to trainer Peter Moody: ‘from his age group, Shamus Award and Eurozone have been retired, and then there’s older horses like Fiorente who won’t be coming back, so we decided to race on for another season. We thought it’s a good time to give him his chance at a race like the Cox Plate, but only time will tell if it’s the right call. The one thing with him is that he’s improved every preparation and if that trend continues he could prove up to the top level.’
Dissident ran out the winner of the Group 1 Randwick Gunieas last autumn, and finished sixth in the Rosehill Guineas, too, so if Moody’s prediction of continued improvement turns out to be on the money, then Dissident will be a real prospect in the Spring, and a horse to keep an eye on when you’re looking over the Racing odds…
