Racing Odds: A Right Royal Melbourne Cup?

September 5th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

It’s no secret that Queen Elizabeth II is keen on Racing, but you somehow can’t imagine her checking over the Racing odds in the morning papers over her coffee and toast. She might be keeping an eye on the early odds for the 2014 Melbourne Cup, mind you, and especially the odds for Estimate, the horse who could easily be the Queen’s first Melbourne Cup runner since the mid-nineties.

The possibility of a Royal presence at the 2041 Melbourne Cup (and maybe even a Royal visit to Melbourne in the Spring?) is understandably grabbing the headlines, but Estimate is just one of the more notable amongst a very strong field of international horses io the nominations for the Melbourne Cup. Estimate is a Sagaro Stakes and Gold Cup winner in a career that still promises plenty, and with the right sort of preparation (and without a repeat of recent controversy), she could be a decent chance.

The Race That Stops A Nation just seems to get more international in flavour every year, and we’ll be returning to the topic in these pages over the next few weeks, but with the first nominations there’s already a compelling story developing: Queen Elizabeth II could have a real chance in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, but it’s the first lady of Australian Racing who has the favourite in today’s Racing oddsThe Offer is the stand-out horse at this early stage. Watch this space for more as the story unfolds!
