Racing Odds: Melbourne Cup Nominations
September 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfWe just love to see international horses making the journey to Australia to take part in The Race That Stops A Nation. Undeniably, they add an extra element to Australia’s biggest race, and their inclusion only makes those Racing odds more interesting for punters all around the country – and all around the world.
And there are an impressive 31 overseas horses nominated for the 2014 edition of the Melbourne Cup, three more than last year’s. We’re not sure if that means there will be as many runners from abroad in the race as the nine who featured last year, but already the stories are starting to form, and the overseas raiders are very much at the heart of the narrative.
It’s local boy The Offer and Gai Waterhouse who carry the favourite tag, but there could be a right royal contender in the form of Estimate, a prospect owned by Queen Elizabeth II. That contest between two great ladies of Racing will be an interesting sub-plot, but Estimate is by no means the only overseas prospect who could feature strongly. From Japan, Admire Rakti and Bande could both be real chances, and Estimate’s fellow European Red Cadeaux is a real warrior who has two second place Melbourne Cup runs in the past four years, and who will be desperate to bring home that elusive win.
Whatever happens between now and November, we’ve got you covered with all the Racing odds, so check back regularly!
