Racing Odds: Melbourne Cup Winner Dunaden Retires

August 13th, 2014 by Pom de Turf

It goes without saying that a race like the Melbourne Cup makes memories. And there have been some indelible memories made for all of us over the years – a few of them made by the same horse, Dunaden. It was Dunaden who won the closest Melbourne Cup finish, and it was Dunaden who represented a generation of overseas raiders, winning the Caulfield Cup the year after he snuck the Melbourne Cup. So it was with real sadness that we read the news of Dunaden’s retirement from racing through injury, and that sadness will be repeated every time we look down a list of Racing odds for any of the big races in the Melbourne Spring that doesn’t feature that familiar name.

Dunaden retires with 10 wins and 20 placings from his 46 starts, and if he had made the 2014 Melbourne Cup, it would have been his fourth. Over a career that raked in more than $9million, Dunaden won the hearts of racing fans all around the world, and it will feel like a poorer Melbourne Cup field without the veteran runner.

Which isn’t to say it’s not a Melbourne Cup field that’s packed with quality, and that isn’t to say that it won’t be a thrilling race again this year. The Offer is the current favourite on Sportsbet, but there are lots of horses in the frame, and lots we can see winning it. Just don’t expect another hair’s-breadth win in the style of Dunaden over Red Cadeaux – we’re not sure our nerves can stand it!
