Racing Odds: No Pre-Melbourne Cup Run For Mutual Regard
October 16th, 2014 by Pom de TurfMutual Regard will make his bid for the 2014 Melbourne Cup without a preparatory run on Australian soil, it looks like. Trainer Johnny Murtagh is happy to send him into The Race That Stops A Nation on the back of a great run that saw him come home ahead of the rest of the field in the Ebor at York, and he’ll be hoping that fresh legs will see him have a say in the big race. The Racing odds suggest he’s on the right track, too – Mutual Regard is a $21.00 bet on Sportsbet right now…
Obviously, without the benefit of seeing Mutual Regard in action before November 4th, punters will have to go on what they saw at York back in August, and that was a pretty impressive display. We don’t know it that will be enough to offset not seeing him on Australian soil, of course – we’ll have to keep an eye on the Racing odds between now and the day of the race. Murtagh will know the importance of a decent preparation for Mutual Regard if he’s going to be a Melbourne Cup contender, but it sounds like everything is going according to plan: ‘he’s settled in very well. He’s a pretty straightforward horse. He travelled over good. He lost a few kilos but he’s putting that back on now. He’s going well. He seems to be nice and fresh. I think he’ll go straight for the race. He goes well fresh. I just hope I have him in the same shape as when he turned up at York.’
So keep an eye out for Mutual Regard: in a Melbourne Cup that’s going to include plenty of veteran horses, it’s just possible that he’s the right sort of horse to mix it up with the rest and come home well…
