Racing Odds: O’Shea Weighs Golden Rose Options
July 23rd, 2014 by Pom de TurfLooking ahead to September 13th and the Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill, it seems like trainer John O’Shea has an embarrassment of riches at his fingertips, and that he’ll have some tricky decisions to make when it comes to choosing a prospect to run. We make three colts that will be in his thoughts before the Golden rose Stakes, and we’ll be looking for their Racing odds between now and then…
It looks like Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake is being ruled out of the Golden Rose Stakes by O’Shea at this point, which is interesting news in itself – but that opens up the possibility that other prospects in O’Shea’s care will be given their chance: ‘the Golden Rose is an option for us but the reality is that if one of the colts is going well she won’t run in it and we do have three nice colts set for the race,’ say O’Shea. He’s talking about Ghibellines, Sarajevo and Meursault – all colts to keep an eye on. O’Shea again: ‘Ghibellines to me, he looks to have strengthened, he’s grown quite a bit. He was a good Todman Stakes winner (and) that race traditionally is a great form race going forward. He seems to be a horse that would appreciate a little further, maybe even further than the 1400m of the Golden Rose. Meursault and Sarajevo only had the one run but they were both very impressive.’
Earthquake, meanwhile, will pose another set of tough choices for O’Shea: ‘I’m still learning about her. Kerrin (McEvoy) continues to tell me she has never been an in-your-face filly at home and that would describe her adequately. She goes about her business quite relaxed. She seems to be a happy filly, which is pretty much what we are all about at the moment. We’ll probably get her to the trials in a couple of weeks and see what happens after that.’ So keep an eye out for Earthquake when you’re checking out those Racing odds – we’re curious to see where she’ll be headed in the Spring…
