Racing Odds: Pale Mimosa No Certainty For The Melbourne Cup
September 3rd, 2014 by Pom de TurfPale Mimosa, a classy 5-year-old mare trained by Dermot Weld, recorded an eye-catching win at York last week in the Lonsdale Cup – the sort of win that has pundits filling up column inches, that makes punters sit up and pay attention, and that means that Pale Mimosa is a name you’ll see featuring in the Racing odds we’ve got for you as the Melbourne Spring looms.
But Pale Mimosa is by no means a certainty for the Melbourne Cup, according to Weld, who was asked the question pretty much immediately after she came home in that Lonsdale Cup win: ‘we will see. The problem is that she loves a bit of ease in the ground; the track here is beautiful and is a credit to the York management. We will think about Melbourne and discuss it in great detail and see where we go with her. We now have to get our heads around the couple of options that there are. There’s the Doncaster Cup, but we are also quite keen to look at the Irish St Leger. It is shorter in trip, but might be a way to sharpen her up with the possibility of the Melbourne Cup. The Queen will have a really good input about how she would like to play it because it is quite a big decision to go to Australia. It is step by step until the Queen hears all the arguments and what Sir Michael (Stoute) thinks, but he said today was probably a good enough trial in itself for the Melbourne Cup. It is a big decision for all sorts of reasons. She is lightly raced, but if the training goes well it would be a great fun thing to do.’
So a quick word with the Head of State and Pale Mimosa could be making the trip to Australian shores to take part in the 2014 Melbourne Spring. You’d think she probably has the quality to make a go of the Melbourne Cup, but we’ll have to keep an ear to the ground as to whether she’ll run or not, and see if she appears amongst those Melbourne Cup odds…
