Rolling Stones Odds-On To Rock The Melbourne Cup?
October 3rd, 2014 by Pom de TurfThe jewel in the crown of the Melbourne Spring Racing Festival, the Melbourne Cup hardly needs any more lustre – but it’s an event that just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. We spend a lot of time checking back in on those Racing odds for the big race, but it’s nice to see some news stories about the Melbourne Cup that aren’t about the racing, but about how big the day has become for Australians everywhere, and not just the all-year-round Racing fans.
We’ve already reported that the Melbourne Cup itself has been on a tour of Australia and New Zealand to get people excited about The Race That Stops A Nation (as if they need any encouragement!), and now we’re hearing that there could be a pretty big headline act for us to enjoy on Cup Day: the Rolling Stones just happen to be in town to play the Rod Laver Arena on November 5th, and there’s a decent chance they’ll be doing a turn for Melbourne Cup fans the night before, as well.
And there will be some rock-and-roll stars in the race itself, too. It looks like The Offer, Gai Waterhouse’s big hope of a back-to-back Melbourne Cup win, could easily stay a favourite, but there are a couple of strong Japanese contenders in the mix, and Bande is currently on the same $12.00 as The Offer. The other Japanese raider is Admire Rakti, and he’s a genuine prospect, with pundits already making comparisons to 2006 Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues. Obviously we’ve got all the Racing odds for you if you follow the link there, and we were planning to finish on a little Rolling Stones wordplay for you, but there are so many massive Stones hits we didn’t want to restrict ourselves to just one – so insert your own Rolling Stones sign-off here!
