Spring Festival Racing Odds: Messene For The Memsie Stakes
August 27th, 2014 by Pom de TurfMessene is another horse who has had their plans changed as a result of the wet weather – he was intended for the Warwick Stakes, but the heavy going put paid to that plan, and the Hawkes brothers have decided to give him a go in the Memsie Stakes at the weekend. There will be plenty of punters with an eye out for how he goes, too, because he’s likely to be a fixture of those Racing odds for the Melbourne Spring…
Messene could be involved in either the Epsom Handicap or the Cox Plate, and it looks like the Hawkes brothers are taking things a step at a time with him. Michael Hawkes spoke to the press last week: ‘he will go to Melbourne and where he goes after that will depend on how he runs; whether he heads back to Sydney for maybe an Epsom, but that is yet to be determined. We are taking it one race at a time and this time of the year, particularly with how the weather has been, we have the advantage of Melbourne and Sydney stables to do that. We are half sitting on the fence, but in saying that we are going forward with him and he is a very talented horse.’
Either way, it’s the Memsie Stakes this weekend, and how Messene goes will give us an indication of how his Melbourne Spring Campaign might shape up: ‘he will head down tonight. His work was very good this morning. It was a bit of a shame that the wet weather did come because he has improved a lot this horse and he still probably has a little bit to go. He is taking on some fair company in a Group 1 Memsie, but in saying that, we feel that it is the right decision for the horse and that is what we are about. He could have ran Saturday, it probably would have gutted him and he doesn’t like wet tracks so what’s the point?’
The signs are pretty good for Messene, so look out for him in the Racing odds for the Melbourne Spring…
