State of Origin Odds: Queensland Squad Announcement
May 23rd, 2014 by TJ DilferFew sporting sides have seen the sort of sustained success that Queensland have seen in the State of Origin – and that success comes in one of the most intense sporting contests we know of, and in the series that is the absolute pinnacle of rugby league here in Australia and almost certainly in the world. So you can understand why this Queensland side is so highly regarded, and you can see why, with the State of Origin odds standing as they are, Maroons coach Mal Meninga is happy to show faith in the players who brought him success in last year’s series.
It’s a fortunate position for a coach to find himself in, having the opportunity to speak about loyalty and character in the press build-up to State of Origin Game 1. We suspect that Meninga was playing some mind games when he spoke about character in the wake of Mitchell Pearce’s drink-induced indiscretions, but when he speaks about loyalty, he’s expressing his own trust in the group of players who won last year’s State of Origin series. So the Maroons go into this year’s State of Origin with their side largely unchanged from last year – though there are some new faces, most notably Aidan Guerra making his debut – and with fans no doubt expecting more of the same. Can the Maroons deliver?
