West Coast $2.15 Outsiders Against Freemantle
February 17th, 2014 by TJ DilferHere’s a great game in store: the Dockers and the Eagles go head to head in tonight’s NAB Challenge match, and it looks like both clubs are putting out strong sides to contest what will be a great game to watch. We’ve wondered in these pages what the policies of the coaches will be in the NAB Challenge this year, but it looks like both Ross Lyon and Adam Simpson have taken the view that putting out the strongest possible side will benefit their clubs the most with an eye on the start of the season proper.
Freemantle are favourites going into the game, at $1.70, and their squad looks strong enough to justify the bookies’ faith, with 17 of last year’s Grand Final roster running out again tonight. Matthew Pavlich, Luke McPharlin and Aaron Sandilands will be key to the Dockers’ chances, and their fans will be hoping that new faces impress, too: Scott Gumbleton, Colin Sylvia and youngster Alex Pearce all get their chance in the squad. Against the formidable challenge that last year’s Grand Finalists pose, West Coast will rely on an experienced core of players that includes Darren Glass, Dean Cox, Matt Priddis, Mark LeCras, Josh Kennedy, Eric Mackenzie and Luke Shuey. Add to that a few new recruits like Xavier Ellis, Elliot Yeo and draftee Dom Sheed, and you’ve got a line-up that could give us one of the best pre-season fixtures of the bunch.
In terms of betting, there are some good markets on Sportsbet right now if you’re wanting to look beyond the $1.70 you’ll get for Freemantle, and West Coast’s $2.15. If you think it’ll be close, then maybe look at the 1-39 point margins: $2.35 for the Dockers and $2.70 for the Eagles, or either team by fewer than 16 points at $2.55. Take a look, too, at Joshua Kennedy to score first at $9.00…
