Will The Melbourne Cup Be Won By An International Horse?
October 3rd, 2013 by Pom de TurfThere’s no shortage of quality overseas horses making the trip to Australia for the spring season, and for the Melbourne Cup on November 5th. But will the Cup be going overseas after the race is run, or will one of a strong crop of Australian-trained horses be taking the glory?
Hawkspur is the only native Australian runner currently sitting at less than $20: you’ll get $13.00 for him at the moment at Sportsbet. But more significant could be that, of the half dozen horses that are the shortest odds as of today, four are trained here in Australia. Only Mount Athos and Verema are internationally-trained and in serious contention at the moment: Mount Athos is at $15.00 and you’ll get $19.00 for Verema right now at Sportsbet. At last year’s Melbourne Cup, the first seven horses to cross the line were bred in Ireland: Puissance De Lune’s backers will be hoping that’s a sign, but there will be plenty in Australian racing hoping that it’s the trainers that make the difference, and Australian trainers at that. Either way, keep an eye on Puissance De Lune, because Australian trainer Darren Weir puts him in that group, too, and he’s a $5.50 favourite at Sportsbet right now…
