World Cup 2014: A Look At The Early Favourites
January 17th, 2014 by G WaldorfIt might still be a few months until the first kick-off of the World Cup in Brazil, but already there’s some excitement building. We’ve had a chance to see how the groups will look, and we’re enjoying the chance to speculate about how they might pan out – and especially how Australia can hope to escape from what looks like a bad group to have ended up in.
But who are the favourites at this early stage to make the tournament theirs and to lift the coveted golden trophy? Brazil will be the first name that springs to mind for most people. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will unveil his squad on May 7th, and there’s little doubt that Brazil will expect the national side to be involved in the closing stages of the tournament, at the very least. On Sportsbet right now, they are the favourites to lift the trophy at $4.33, and it’s interesting to look at the odds you’ll get for them being eliminated at various stages. Only once has the host nation failed to qualify for the second round (South Africa didn’t make it), so it’ll be a shock if they go out in the group stage, so there’s probably no real value in the $9.50 you’ll get for that to happen. Look for a Quarter-Final exit at $5.00 or a Semi-Final defeat at $5.50. If you think Brazilian hearts will be broken in the final, then you’ll get odds of $7.00.
Elsewhere, the holders Spain are at $8.00, behind both Argentina and Germany – both of them currently sitting on $6.00. We’ll come back to take a closer look at the hosts and their preparations in the next few weeks, and we’ll be looking at lots of the other teams, too.
