World Cup 2014: Australia’s Group
January 9th, 2014 by G WaldorfSo we’ve had a little while to absorb the draw for the World Cup, and in particular to size up Group B, in which the Socceroos find themselves, along with The Netherlands, Chile and Spain…
There will be Aussie fans all around the country cursing the national team’s luck in finding themselves in a group with the Cup holders, but Ange Postecoglou struck a much more upbeat note: ‘we’ve got a very young squad and this will be a great opportunity for them to pick up experience. And well, the way I see it, this is the World Cup. It’s the best football nations on the planet and we will embrace the challenge that lies ahead of us. We will see some great football played in our group and it’s up to us to play a part in that. We wanted to play some big nations. We want to test ourselves against the best nations on the biggest stage.’
Well, he’s got everything he could have wished for, then. There’s no doubting the challenge ahead of Postecoglou and his young Socceroos, but the same fans shaking their heads in dismay at the 2014 group should look back to 2010, when a win over Serbia would have meant qualification but for a goal-line handball and a missed opportunity to register a win over Ghana. Postecoglou will surely have his sights set on advancement to the Round of 16 – the fans can’t ask for much more than that, and it would be a great result for a young squad: they’re an $8.00 bet to get out of the group on Sportsbet right now. Maybe there’s more value in that than in a $501.00 bet for an Australia World Cup win in 2014…
