World Cup: Ange Embraces Long Odds
April 30th, 2014 by G WaldorfThere are fewer than 45 days to go before the 2014 World Cup kicks off with hosts Brazil in action against Croatia, and it’s only a couple of days afterwards that the Socceroos run out in the fixture that could make or break their World Cup effort. If you’ve read any of our posts in these pages, you’ll know that we’re already quite excited, and we’re not the only ones! Get your odds for Chile vs Australia by following the link, and read on for the thoughts of Australia coach Ange Postecoglu…
We’re loving the regeneration that seems to be going on in the Australia squad, and that re-invigoration is down in large part to Ange Postecoglu and to the attitude he’s worked to instil in the squad. Injecting young players into the side always helps to freshen things up, but Postecoglu has already described the change he wants to see: he wants the Socceroos to play aggressively, fearlessly and to entertain. In short, like an Australian sporting side.
And he’s embracing the long odds facing his Socceroos. The fact they’re an $8.00 bet to get out of Group B doesn’t seem to faze Postecoglu at all. In fact, we get the impression that he’s relishing the challenge, and that he’s encouraging his players to do the same. As underdogs, the Socceroos can truly play without fear, and when expectations are that they will fail to make an impression on the tournament, then any sort of success will feel like a big win. Speaking recently, Postecoglu summed up his attitude like this: ‘the World Cup will be an experience for us all, but I don’t want a team of players that just want to go to the World Cup – anyone can buy tickets and do that. I want a team of players who want to make a difference. It’s a tough group, but the flipside of that is that there’s an opportunity to do something that no one expects us to do. We can capitalise on that. Australia is a sporting nation and we never go into any contest thinking we can’t win and football is no different. There’s a real chance for us all to create a special moment that lasts longer than the competition.’
We reckon he’s got the right attitude, and we’re looking forward to seeing his young Socceroos in action. We might even be tempted to place a bet or two on them: get all your odds for Australia following the link, and see if there’s anything you like the look of. We’ve got all the World Cup odds you could ever want, too!
