World Cup: Australia vs South Africa Friendly May 26th
March 31st, 2014 by G WaldorfAnge Postecoglu’s Socceroos squad is starting to take its rough shape, and he’s known for a little while what his team will be facing when they get to Brazil for the FIFA World Cup 2014. Group B looks like it will be a tough proving ground for Australia’s young talent – get all the Australia World Cup odds by clicking the link (or for a more comprehensive look at the tournament, head here: World Cup 2014 odds), and you’ll see exactly what we mean. The Socceroos will be targeting their first game against a pretty consistent Chile side, and things will be looking bleak for Australia if they come away from that first fixture with nothing.
So it’s incredibly important that the Socceroos as as well prepared as they can possible be when they hit the ground for the tournament. The recent friendly against Ecuador was a bit of mixed bag, and hinted at a work that was very much still in progress: on the one hand the Socceroos played a pleasing brand of football that brought some rising stars into the game and that bagged Tim Cahill a brace of goals that made him Australia’s record goalscorer; on the other hand, the game ultimately got away from the Socceroos, and ended in defeat. It could be that we’re heading into a era that will see an Australia side that’s developing, and fans will have to be patient with the results – the 2015 Asia Cup will be the proof of that, and a stern test for Postecoglu and his side, looking at the draw for that tournament. In the meantime, there’s another friendly on the schedule before the World Cup, and that’s in May against South Africa. With all the news in the last week or so focussing on Harry Kewell’s retirement and looking ahead to the Asian Cup in 2015, Postecoglu has had a little time to gather his thoughts. Rest assured, though, that there will be very close scrutiny of that friendly against South Africa – we won’t be the only people wanting to see how the next generation of Socceroos are going to shape up, and we suspect that we won’t be the only people taking a look at the odds for that game, either. Make sure you check back in on us for all the odds between now and May 26th, but there’s plenty of Australia World Cup odds to check out on Sportsbet right now, and a look at the Chile vs Australia odds, too, for that all-important first game…
